In Honor of National Volunteer Month, we're highlighting a few of our resident volunteers. Marilyn Himmel was selected as an "Everyday Hero" by a local newspaper for making the community a better place to live. Marilyn, a retired school teacher, has volunteered two days each week for the past 17 years at Repeat Boutique, a ministry that donates clothes, toys, and wares to the homeless, immigrants, and refugees who have just arrived in the US. Today, meet resident Jan Smith, a recent Citizen of the Year. One only needs to speak with Jan for a few moments before her passions become quite plain. Jan cares deeply and serves selflessly to help the poor, the hungry, the homeless, the environment, and the “pollinators.”
In 1971 she started the Organic Garden Club in Carol Stream, and over the years it has expanded to become the DuPage Organic Garden Club. She has brought in experts from outside the community to educate and inspire residents. She has been so committed to the beautification of Carol Stream through the Park District and Garden Club that they named a park after her, where she still plants, weeds and educates others.
Long before we collectively became concerned about saving the environment or talked about the “web of life” and the interdependence of all living things – plants, insects, birds, animals, and even humans – Jan Smith was quietly doing something about it. After retiring, Jan and Earl moved to Windsor Park, where little by little she has altered the landscape. Literally. She tends multiple garden plots here on our grounds, including a wonderful Butterfly Garden to give a safe haven for Monarchs and other species. She has educated other residents, our Green Committee, and even our Groundskeeping crew on how to integrate native Illinois plants in order to provide the right habitats for the “pollinators” – butterflies, bees and dragonflies – that we now know have become endangered as people replace native vegetation with curated, manicured landscapes. A plant native to California has been shown to have promising effects in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies identified the shrub Yerba santa, long known for its medicinal properties (the name is Spanish for “Holy weed”), as a treatment for oxytosis, which a form of regulated cell death, in the brain. Historically, the herb has been used to treat a variety of ailments, including respiratory conditions, fever, and headaches. Today, the chemical sterubin has been isolated from Yerba santa and identified as a powerful antioxidant, “approximately four times more potent in preventing neurodegeneration” than a similar compound isolated from strawberries.
